<<in blackjack, it is felt that you never split tens. a professional of course would split the pair, if the count indicated that doubling the bet yielded an acceptable chance. of course the gambler would also understand that the second bet was hedged by the first as the chances of losing both bets are so small given the card count.

what's fascinating is that everyone else at the blackjack table would think the gambler to be a complete idiot. of course the security expert would immediately be alerted that this gambler indeed was a professional and not a moron>>

Valid points. In double deck play, the count gets sufficiently high that 10-splitting is correct at at least one point in the shoe about 1 out of 5 shoes. There is a tactical advantage in having the other players think you're an idiot, too. If they all leave the table at the very time that the counter splits that hand, he gets the remainder of that (expectation-rich, high count shoe) to himself. Of course, as you say, the SEC...ERRRR, casino security immediately snaps to the play when they see 10's split, because a 10-splitter is either a counter or a moron...and subsequent play (as well as review of the playing tape up to that point) will readily determine which of the two he is.
