Kap,

I would like to be the fly on the wall during the conversation (if it ever happened) between Microsoft and Intel about MSFT writing an OS for yet another instruction set (incompatible with x86-64).

INTC: "We want you to rewrite your OS and all your apps for our new instruction set"

MSFT: "What are you talking about, we are alredy doing it for your Stinkanium. We haven't made a penny on it. We should have charged you upfront. It has been a total waste of time and resources. Nobody is buying it. Our market research (checking out some warez sites) indicates there is no interest in it."

INTC: "Not that one. We are planning on another instruction set. This one is top secret. The reason it is top secret is because we don't really want to sell any chips with this instruction set."

MSFT: "Ha Ha Ha. That's a good one. What are you going to call this one, Hindenburgium?"

INTC: "We are dead serius"

MSFT: "Ok, what's in it for us? We are not going to start another rathole project like the Win-64 for Stinkanium. If you want us to work on this nonsense, it is cash upfront. Our initial estimate is $2 billion for the OS, additonal apps will be extra. For all we know, you will be the only customer, like with the Win-64 for Stinkanium.

INTC: "Ok. I have this blank check with me that Andy Bryant gave me".

Later in the day, MSFT rep talks to "The Boss".

MSFT rep: "Boss, I got a check from INTC. They want us to write for them another OS. This is for their top secret chip Hindenburgium or something".

The Boss: "Good job. Let's get rolling. (picks up the phone) Human resources? We need about 1,000 interns. Ballmer? We just sold an OS to INTC for cool 2 bills. We are going to put our "C" team on it. Guys, just make sure that the thing compiles. that's all we need. If they ever sell a million, we will put an "A" team on SP1.
