ALERT: Just released Standard & Poor's "The Outlook" Midyear Forecast has ASND as 5-Star Stock.

(I had to type this myself outta the newsletter I got today so forgive any typos. Hot off the press, ASCEND was listed among a few other top quality stocks)

Cheers,

Ten Stocks We Like for Capital Gains
Appraised here are five-STARS stocks we regard as particularly attractive for the next 12 months

ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS

We feel a recent decline in Ascend shares on a delay in shippping a new product was an overreaction. This high-tech company which develops a broad range of high-speed digital wide area network (WAN) access products, should see profits grow more than 50% annually over the next two years. Ascend's remote access concentrators and servers allow corporations and Internet service providers (ISPs) to offer remote access to the booming small office/home office market. The company's MAX line of WAN access switchers and Pipeline family of remote local area network (LAN) access servers have become the products of choice for ISPs and telecommuters. We expect Ascend's pending acquisition of Cascade Communications, a leader in frame relay switching technology for data networking, to be a major plus in view of Ascend's expertise in remote access servers and Cascade's specialization in ATM and frame relay switching technologies. We estimate profits will jump 60% to $1.50 a share this year and 56% to $2.35 for 1998.

The stock (ASND, 41, Nasdaq *****; Quality ranking: NR) should outperform the market over the next 12 months.
