I was looking at a volunteer website for my home town today - not an emergency preparedness one, just common garden volunteering - and found something I'd like to do, volunteer at a court. I am a lawyer, and it makes sense to use my special training. I wouldn't be much good in a medical emergency, and I am not physically fit enough to be much help in a disaster, but I can also cook, and clean, and run a Xerox machine, and all that kind of stuff, where volunteers are always welcome.

I always laugh at movies like "Mad Max" that show American society falling apart after a nuclear war. Once we quit running around in circles, we'd all gather together and start organizing all over again. People like me would be cooking soup and organizing the provisions and people with strong backs would be digging latrines and people who can play guitars would sing for us and Al Haig types would be saying "I'm in charge."-g-
