It sounds like you understand the situation pretty well.
Timing is everything, and Micron is a tad late to get a deal like they have with Toshiba. I remember the TOSH CEO said We want out!, a clear signal for a deal. Hynix after just restructuring in Oct already had the creditors write off $1B+, so the reluctance for the creditors to write any more off. The market is strong at the moment and more convincing every day that maybe a longer term shortage rather than shorter term.
If Micron really wants to be number 1, they will have to pay a bit more realistically for the fabs and the technology and their business. It's not just an asset sale.
Somehow someway I think Hynix and Micron will figure out a way or Appleton may have to give up the idea of ever being number 1 in the DRAM industry.
