SINGAPORE, Feb 1 (AFP) -
Singaporean manufacturers are gloomy about their prospects in the first six months of 2002 due to uncertainty in the US economy and the global electronics sector, a government survey showed Friday.

Singapore's main exporters in the electronics industry project lower demand for personal computers and semiconductors from January to June compared to the final three months of 2001, the Economic Development Board (EDB) said.

"Manufacturers are generally cautious in their business outlook for the first half of 2002. This is due in part to seasonal factors, which leads to lower industrial activities in the first quarter of the year," the board said.

Manufacturers usually increase production towards the December quarter to meet seasonal demand during the Christmas holidays.

"Besides, the manufacturers are also concerned about the uncertainties in the US economy and global electronics demand," the EDB said in unveiling its latest survey of the manufacturing sector.
