Taiwan's UMC, AMD team up for wafer joint venture in Singapore

TAIPEI, Feb 1 (AFP) -
Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) and US-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced Friday they were setting up an advanced microchip joint venture in Singapore.

The venture, AU Partnership Ltd, will produce personal computer processor and other products, the companies said.

It would begin commercial production using 0.065 micron technology by mid-2005, they said in a statement without disclosing financial details.

The deal will allow AMD, which is battling to beef up its chip production processes amid greater competition from rival Intel Corp, to share the high costs associated with such a technology transition.

"Today's agreement reflects an innovative response to the tectonic shift that has changed the fundamental economics of the worldwide semiconductor industry," said AMD chief executive W.J. Sanders.

The two parties said they would also collaborate in the development of advanced process technologies for semiconductor logic products.
