Teledesic reaches satellite construction deal

February 01, 2002 10:05:00 AM ET

BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb 1 (Reuters) - Teledesic LLC said on Friday it has hired Italy's Alenia Spazio SpA to build satellites for its broadband satellite communications network.

Terms of the agreement with Alenia Spazio, a unit of Italian defense and engineering company Finmeccanica SpA , were not disclosed.

Teledesic, which is in the process of building its network, said the deal covers construction of its first two satellites, and it is negotiating with Alenia Spazio and other satellite manufacturers for the remainder.

The plan by Teledesic, which was founded by telecommunications pioneer Craig McCaw and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) founder Bill Gates, calls for 30 satellites that will orbit Earth.

The first 12 satellites are expected to cost less than $1 billion and will allow the company to begin commercial service in several areas of the world.

The other 18 satellites will enable full global coverage capacity. REUTERS
