Russell was a fine philosopher and humanitarian (and an early personal hero of mine) but like most of the insular British upper class of his generation hopelessly clueless when it came to politics and the reality of evil in the world. They were all so charmed by "Uncle Joe" Stalin and so easily swayed by his "reasonableness" and the "nobility of his cause". His type was the first to be liquidated wherever the "Uncle Joe's" of the world took power. One presumes they were puzzled to the end as to what was happening.
