[Put your favorite person here] was a fine philosopher and humanitarian (and a late personal hero of mine) but like most of the insular American middle-class of my generation hopelessly clueless when it came to politics and the reality of evil in the world. They were all so charmed by Vladimir V. Putin and so easily swayed by his "reasonableness" and the "awe of his office". His type was the first to be nonplussed wherever the "Putins" of the world showed their true colors. One presumes they were puzzled to the end as to what was happening.
