Net connections in India set to get cheaper

NEW DELHI: Videsh Sanchar Nigam on Wednesday announced slashing of international bandwidth rates by 35-40 per cent. At the same time, the government also deregulated the bandwidth market. The move is expected to make Internet access in the country cheaper.

The cut will lead in a reduction of both bulk and retail Internet access rates and will have a positive impact on Internet service providers.

Making the announcement, Union Minister of Telecom and Information Technology Pramod Mahajan also said that the international telecom firm, FLAG Telecom, would be allowed to directly sell bandwidth to ISPs following the resolution of a dispute with VSNL.

This will mean that ISPs can directly negotiate the bandwidth rates with the international carrier which has a under-sea cable landing at VSNL's gateway in Mumbai. In spite of VSNL's latest cut in bandwidth prices, international bandwidth rates are much lower and ISPs are expected to flock to FLAG for cheaper bandwidth.

"This will result in greater usage of bandwidth by the Indian industry and provide a further boost to India's IT sector," Mahajan told a news conference.

The rate reduction will be subject to approval by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, he added.

"The outstanding dispute between VSNL and FLAG Telecom has been resolved," Mahajan told the news conference. "FLAG can sell its bandwidth directly to ISPs with immediate effect."

Mahajan added that from April 1, FLAG would be able to sell its capacity directly to international long distance operators as well.

"Access and interconnect charges will be agreed between VSNL and FLAG on a fair and reasonable basis," he said. This decision will almost double the bandwidth availability in India, he said.
