the terrorist on our roads. from a state trooper friend i xxxx out the real names. On the night of September 20, 2000, Martha Powers fled from trooper xxxxxxxxxxxx from SP Concord A-3. In her reckless operation and inebriated state, she crashed her Ford Explorer at the top of the ramp leading from the access road for exits 23-24-25 to Rt. 30, Weston. After crashing, she then drove the wrong way at trooper xxxxxx with her headlights off. After attempting crash into trooperxxxxxxx, she then proceeded the wrong way down the access ramp into more oncoming traffic, which was forced to pull over and out her way. She drove her Explorer over the VW Golf leaving Julie Saville severely injured. She then crashed her Explorer into a Corvette, demolishing that as well and injuring them as well.
Martha Powers didn't stop to render aid to the injured or stop to see how badly anyone was injured. Instead she took flight into the woods and led myself and about 40 other police officers on a wild goose chase for a "carjacker", which Martha claimed she was taken hostage by. All the while we searched, Tpr.xxxxxxxx was performing CPR on Julie Saville in an attempt to save her life. Martha kept claiming she was carjacked while Julie Saville was fighting for her life for the next 24 hours, later dying at Boston Medical Center during the early hours of September 22, 2000.
trooperxxxxxx and I found holes in Martha's story and with a few props utilized for the purposes of an interview and subsequent confession, Martha admitted to driving her car. As Tpr. xxxxxxxx put it, "The lives of Julie Saville and her family have been permanently interrupted." I can't think of any better way to put it.
This date we were all called to hear the pathetic sentence imposed for Martha's crime. For the death of a young woman, and for the actions of a repeat offender, Martha receives a sentence of three years with credit for time served and a 10 year probation after the completion of her three years. Justice was not properly served for the Saville family, and for the four of us present at the sentence ( 4 troopers), our hearts go out to the Saville family.
It was embarrassing to have to listen to the lenient sentence imposed by the judge onto Martha Powers. The Saville family, having flown over from the United Kingdom, had to listen as the judge imposed what he called, "a sentence within the parameters of the crime set by the sentencing commission." What was moving and powerful were the victim impact statements of Julie Saville's first cousin and Julie's mother. Only someone who has endured so much pain from that type of loss can understand what Mrs. Saville was going through. Julie's cousin blasted the judge on his leniency and said things to him that we as police officers will never have the privilege of being able to say to a judge like this one.
If you get a chance, please try to see the news tonight...WBZ News 4, WCVB News Center 5, Channel 7 News, or FOX 25 News at 10PM. It's nice to see the citizens angry with lenient judges. I don't know how some of these guys look themselves on the mirror before they sleep or awaken for the day.
