Just consider how simple that decision was:

1) Nobody in the US admin is fooled about what Arafat is.

2) If Arafat is cut off, Arab allies bolt and the regional eruption would compel policy changes in a new direction, at a time when the current direction is gathering fruit by the bushels worldwide.

3) Without Arafat, the subsequent power vacuum gains nothing perceived to be of value to US interests.

4) The US should also not appear to be Sharon's stooge, as well.
