Bush applauded at predominantly black high school

The Associated Press

President Bush received thundering applause this afternoon when he arrived at a west Atlanta high school. Even in a predominantly black neighborhhod where Bush got only a handful of votes in his presidential election, the commander in chief got a hero's welcome.

Students and teachers at the school say Bush has done an excellent job leading the country since September Eleventh. Even Democrats in the audience heaped praise on the president, who is enjoying record-high approval ratings. Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney has been an outspoken critic of Bush but thanked him today for coming to the school.

Washington High was once the only school in Atlanta for blacks. Martin Luther King Junior went to school there.

Bush thanked Democrats in the audience for their support in the war on terrorism. He said -- quote -- "first and foremost, we're all Americans."
