Kodiak,
Backatcha.........
Re: Condit vs. Ken Lay - Sir, I believe you may be suffering from "tin ear" syndrome. I know you are a loyal Bushista, and as such, you necessarily must be in denial about reality. And the reality is that Condit may have been a titty-lation for the tabloid terrorized populace, but it was a Fresno story. It didn't amount to anything more than the private indiscretion of one man, and a cover-up. And the Republican spin cycle moral spalling flim flam flaks were trying to make a mountain out a mole. That story just didn't have legs. And they may never find 'em.
OTOH, the stink on Ken Lay's life of crime and the company he keeps has a wonderful aroma of intrigue, subplots, whodunitz, tentacles of corruption leading to the highest offices (Dubya denies his use of recreational 'stuff', of course) in the nation. This is kabuki, this is King Lear, Hamlet, ham-handed. This is, in short, too much fun.
I have to admit to a real joy to see Tricky Dick Cheney make a damn fool of hisself with his stonewalling of the GAO. Even the Congressional wing of your party is getting really exercised over the stupidity of the man, and the moronic advisers inside the White House who are simply too arrogant to lead a great nation, let alone an interim administration.
The beauty of this scandal is that it is going to be an exquisite water torture of GWB. Every day or two for the next 7 months, he's going to be faced with a new document exposed, a new link to criminals brought to light, a new sense of outrage at the greed of the End Run 29 flaunting their wealth, as Andy Fastow is today building a new residence in Houston and pouring money into it at an ungodly rate, while his peons are forced to decide to sell their humble abodes and move to the trailer court after 30 years of loyal service. The juxtaposition is something the average American can relate to and see the injustice of.
I could go on, but let's just say, a lot of the press and a lot of congressmen and women can and will go on, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. Because Bush's position is so enronic. Because he can be the butt of innumerable jokes about his saber rattling wag the dog escapism. Oh, yeah. Bush will perpetrate a war to distract us. I have no doubt. But, in the end, it won't play. Clinton couldn't get away with bombing an aspirin factory to distract Bob Barr from Monica. And we, on our side, have a basic sense of fair play. Skewering Bush is going to be THE sport for the spring and summer. Get used to it.
Alas, the only thing missing for a prurient society is the sex angle. Alas, trying to sell indiscretions concerning FASB Reg 140 is going to be an uphill battle.
So, Kodiak, I reckon you may not get your wish that I'm going to come over to the dark side, after all. Sorry about that.
All the best, Ray :) |
