It almost never has anything to do with the ex-holder of that position, and has everything to do with the CEO surrounding himself with his own buds. It's a peculiar ritual that you will see at virtually any company when they bring in a guy from the outside. This, by the way, is the strongest argument I can think of for promoting from within.
