SAUDIS REDUCE MILITARY TIES WITH U.S. February 3, 2002

The Middle East Newsline reports: “The report asserts that defense officials and military commanders have been meeting less over the last five years. The report, authored by a former Pentagon official, said the two countries have also decreased joint military training.
In a report for the National Defense University, Joseph McMillan, a former Pentagon official who dealt with Saudi Arabia, writes that the kingdom has been hurt by low oil prices, the continued rule of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the incapacitation of King Fahd.

Entitled ‘U.S.-Saudi Relations: Rebuilding the Strategic Consensus,’ the report said rising pressure has led to a steady decrease in contacts between the Saudi and U.S. militaries. The 1996 bombing of a U.S. installation in Khobar resulted in restrictions on the movement of U.S. personnel as well as engagement with their Saudi colleagues…”
