"GW Bush has been in office for only 1 year now... only 9 months when the 9/11 attack occurred. Who was on duty for the 8 years preceding him?"

Sitting on GWB's desk the day he arrived at the WH, was a newly completed report on airport and airline security that Clinton had played a role in initiating screamed watchout airline terrorism looms. It was a scary report, Bush never got around to it. Or at least he was planning to get around to it in the fall.

Bush Sr. didn't have a U.N. or Congressional mandate to go into Baghdad--- Margaret Thatch said we should have finished the job.
You can't pretend that things didn't change -- for the worse -- in Afghanistan and the Middle East over the past 8 years (Clinton's 8 years). The peace process broke down while Clinton was still in office. -- With GWB came an escalation of violence, that was because Israel saw that the U.S. was leaving it to its own devices. Settlement expansion, destruction of palestinian homes in Jerusalem and Israel incitement of the palestinian people. Note how Powell and Zinni both say now that Israel should stop expanding settlement. Also note how many Israel soldiers are coming forward saying they won't serve in the Westbank because they don't like to be ordered to shoot palestinian children.

When you say Arafat had plenty of chances for peace. I don't like Arafat and I think it would be best if he was not part of the scene. But, a lot of people wonder why didn't Arafat go for the last accord Clinton helped shape which gave the Palestinians 90% of the land they sought. The reason is the deal did not include Jerusalem. Survey's of the palestinians living in the region show the people would rather have no deal than a deal that did not include Jerusalem. Sharon hates the palestinians, recall his role in the butchery of palestinians in Lebanon in the early 80s.
