c2,

<< Where are those "millions and millions" of GPRS handsets going? >>

To the same place the "neutered" 1xRTT models currently offered by Sprint PCS are going ...

Same place the "packet data enabled" 1xRTT models will go when they become available, and the user decides he is not ready to subscribe packet data services ...

Same place 90% of the cdmaOne models with a WAP browser have gone and the user has decided not to pay the surcharge for circuit-switched WAP services ...

Into the hands of the consumer who decides to purchase the phone because of its form factor, feature set, and price point.

At such time that compelling applications or content becomes available the user will subscribe packet data services if those services have value to him, and that may or may not have been part of his purchase decision for the GPRS model in the first place.
