The concepts are at the core of all mystic tradition and date back into pre-history in India and Egypt. They can be found in "atheistic" scientific materialism as well as in "new age" spiritual beliefs. Buddhism has probably meditated on The Void as much as any tradition, while Hinduism has done the same with The All.

Physics has been grappling with these issues for only about a century now, beginning with the quantum revolution of the early 20th century. Ironically, what many assume to be "scientific" views in fact reflect a Newtonian world view which modern science has long abandoned. To those who wish to appreciate what modern physics is really doing I recommend reading The Physics of Consciousness by Evan Harris Walker. See amazon.com for details.
