NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), said Sunday he doesn't expect a quick recovery in the global economy and cautioned investors from underestimating the ebullience that remains in certain technology stocks.

"I don't see any big uptick in the next year," Gates said at the World Economic Forum, noting there were few signs of strong growth in the U.S. or Japanese economies.

"Somberness will stay and I think it's healthy" because it will force companies to operate based upon traditional economic principles, Gates added.

Although "a lot of sobriety" returned to investing in 2000 after the Nasdaq peaked, Gates said venture capitalists still flush with cash prolonged the excesses. The economic downturn last year brought more sobriety, but people still "underestimate" the risks that remain, Gates added.

With interest rates low, some investors are still willing to make big bets on "companies based on old thinking" hoping for outsized returns, Gates told a gathering of editors and reporters at the Metropolitan Hotel.
