Serial killers get caught lots sooner in places with little private or public transportation. There are exceptions who bury rheir victims in the backyard or basement. But ease of transportation lets some ring up large numbers of victims.

I expect these mis-wired people are distributed pretty evenly through the world's population but they are a miniscule percentage as you say.

In earlier times they would get their freedom to act out during periods of war and civil unrest when they or their victims would travel unremarked in the crowd.

The late nineteenth century London killer effectively had the same sort of cover due to the heavy fog/smog, lack of lighting and a huge number of defenceless potential victims.. Early nineteenth century London was remarkably violent if the odd statistic I ran across some years ago is true: it was something like one third, or more, of the citizens there either knew a murder victim or a murderer.

The countryside may be a good place to hide the bodies but it certainly isn't a good place for the murderer to live if he does his killing there because everybody knows everyone and their business. On the other hand, the countryside has always been a good place to practice violence because of the isolation but the local population usually draws the line at murder.

It's my suspicion that vampire tales probably have their origin in serial killers.

I don't think modern society is any more debauched than previous ones.
