AT&T's mLife angers MetLife Insurance

moneycentral.msn.com

...The ad will use the theme "mLife," a reference to mobile, as well as such other meanings as "multifaceted," "managed" and "modern."

MetLife, the nation's largest life insurer known for its ads featuring the Peanuts cartoon characters, claimed in its lawsuit filed in federal court in New York that AT&T Wireless' use of "mLife" would cause irreparable harm to the company because it would confuse consumers and dilute its established trademark. It also said AT&T Wireless' television and print ads promoting "mLife" had a similar look and theme to MetLife's "Have you met life today?" ad campaign.

• In response, AT&T Wireless said: "Last time we checked, everyone is still free to use the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, 'm.' MetLife's claims are utterly without merit. AT&T Wireless and MetLife offer entirely unrelated products and services. We offer wireless products and services, while they offer insurance and financial services. As such, there isn't the remotest chance that AT&T Wireless' use of "mLife" could in any way confuse consumers or dilute MetLife's brand. We are confident that the judge will rule in our favor. We have invested millions of dollars and months of efforts in our "mLife" brand campaign, which will be showcased in this Sunday's Super Bowl."
