fair enough. but me, I don't see how the current Israeli policy will get them any place better. The article in the Sunday Times magazine today about the Palestinians' internal debate was quite depressing. I don't think the author (a bit squishy, IMHO) quite understood the consequence of her subjects' "optimism" that in the long run things would work out, give them justice, etc. It's the exact parallel to the Israelis' "optimism" that I've heard expressed, that in the long run the Palestinians will learn, get over it, etc. What such wishful thinking does on both sides, IMHO, is legitimate uncompromising stands in the present in the hopes that in the future compromises won't be necessary. What we really need on both sides is pessimism: a grim realization that none of this will end until both sides give up their maximalist visions. Just as the Palestinians are deluded who think violence helps them, so Sharon is just deluded if he thinks continued settlement building is compatible with ultimate Israeli security.
