Cynically speaking it would be a smart move,maybe not now,but perhaps in the not so distant future.Many telecoms have bonds that require higher interest payments in the case of a down grade in ratings.This naturally affects the bottom line and can lead to further downgrades and further interest payment increases and so on and so on....Eliminate the debt through bank ruptcy and reorganiation and you eliminate the problem,at the cost to the share holders,but who cares about them.
I do not know the specific contract requirements of wcom debt.
