Just to set the record straight, among developed countries the US spends the least amount of its GDP aiding poor countries -- something around 0.1%. Most of this aid goes to two countries: Israel and Egypt, and is part of the bargain we struck with them to get them to sign their peace accord. In contrast, rich European countries and Japan spend as much as ten times more in aid to poor countries, as a proportion of their GDP.
