EU to drop complaint againt Intel soon-source

biz.yahoo.com

BRUSSELS, Feb 4 (Reuters) - The European Commission will soon drop its investigation into a complaint made by a competitor against U.S. computer chip giant Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), an EU source said on Monday.

``The European Commission will soon drop its investigation against Intel Corporation,'' the source told Reuters.

The Commission had been considering two complaints against Intel. One complaint, involving ``chips sets,'' had been withdrawn, the source said.

In a formal statement, the Commission earlier said that because one complaint ``has recently been withdrawn... there is thus no need for the Commission to rule on it.''

The source said that the Commission would also reject a second complaint, alleging that Intel has abused its dominant position in Windows-compatible microprocessors.

The Financial Times reported on Monday that EU competition commissioner Mario Monti had said in New York over the weekend that he had uncovered no evidence to support claims by unidentified rivals concerning the abuse of Intel's dominant position in microprocessors.
