I disagree.

Armed crime should punishable by a completely different schedule than unarmed crime.

Arming for crime indicates premeditation of murder.

Commission of a serious/potentially violent crime while armed should be prosecuted and punished as seriously as attempted murder.

While I do not think general arming of the police is a good thing there are times and places for everything, so selectively armed police forces make a lot of sense to me.
