Yes...but a car's intended purpose is transportation, not weaponry.

And despite that and the fact that there are less cars then guns in the US, cars kill more people.

Still we regulate and make it illegal to DWI...

We regulate the use of firearms more then we do the use of cars. Making DUI illegal is like making random or reckless use of firearms in an urban area illegal and of course such a use of firearms is allready prohibited.

we also make it illegal to drive without a license.

Only on public roads. You can drive on your own land without a license. Besides there is no constitutional right to own or use a car.

The IRA

I think you mean the NRA right?

is openly against smart safeties

They are expesnive, don't work well and reduce the ability for the gun to be used in self defense.

What's your point. We don't deregulate crimes because criminals ignore it.

No, but since the criminals are going to ignore it that means they will be armed. If you disarm regular people you give the criminals a big advantage. Yes cops might be armed but they can't be everywhere. They investigate crime scenes or chase criminals after the crime has been finished more then they actually break up a crime in progress. A criminal can kill a lot of people before the cops arrive.

You could argue that the NRA is directly responsible for all gun crimes committed by known felons who have obtained a gun through legal means.

Even without the NRA guns would not be universally illegal in the US. Besides thats like saying that the campaigners against prohibition are responsible for all drunk driving cases. Furthermore if you want to follow this idea the NRA would be responsible for all the crimes that where prevented, ended, or detered by privately armed individuals, this adds up to millions of crimes that would have been completed but where not because of private gun ownership.
