The objective is to induce criminals to not carry weapons when doing crime. When last I looked, the punishment for murder 1 is somewhat more serious than that for attempted murder and lots more than for simple robbery, B&E, and assault. In my opinion, if you do a violent crime with a weapon you belong in jail for a long time.

In no jurisdiction of the US is Attempted Murder a capitol offense, but murder 1 is in several and should be in all, IMO.

Re: <Why?> -- Police toting guns are a symbol that the police are not on the side of the People, do not trust the People, or are out of control. The People should be the force, the police should be to help the People. That is their job.

When police oppose the majority of the People in any neighborhood they build resentment(s) against themselves and the government.

As I said, in my original post, I think there are times and places for most things. Police should carry when invited in to help the People correct a neighborhood that's out of control.
