Yes...but a car's intended purpose is transportation, not weaponry.

And despite that and the fact that there are less cars then guns in the US, cars kill more people.

Where I live I can't get to work without using my car everyday...So my car is a necessity....I am not sure you can say quite the same about guns...Still, we regulate cars to the nth degree with licences, registrations, insurance, car inspections, etc...Until recently, a felon could buy a gun at a gun show...

Still we regulate and make it illegal to DWI...

We regulate the use of firearms more then we do the use of cars. Making DUI illegal is like making random or reckless use of firearms in an urban area illegal and of course such a use of firearms is allready prohibited.

I fail to follow the connection of your sentence to the original context ...

we also make it illegal to drive without a license.

Only on public roads. You can drive on your own land without a license. Besides there is no constitutional right to own or use a car.

I don't think the use of cars or guns on privately owned lands is an issue worth debating...

The IRA

I think you mean the NRA right?

Yes, I do.

is openly against smart safeties
They are expesnive, don't work well and reduce the ability for the gun to be used in self defense.

Lap belts, air bags, etc...add cost to a car that otherwise kills if misused. It is debatable that they don't work well, but if they do not, it is probably because the NRA has made it economically difficult to perfect them through their opposition. Any new development requires time and support to mature.

What's your point. We don't deregulate crimes because criminals ignore it.

No, but since the criminals are going to ignore it that means they will be armed. If you disarm regular people you give the criminals a big advantage. Yes
cops might be armed but they can't be everywhere. They investigate crime scenes or chase criminals after the crime has been finished more then they
actually break up a crime in progress. A criminal can kill a lot of people before the cops arrive.

Yes...yes...the gunfight at the OK corral argument...
