Verizon Fumbles Its Latest Mobile Launch

A year ago, when European GSM operators launched their upgrades to general packet radio service, or GPRS, their debut was
marred by too much hype and a weak early product line-up. The first phones were almost indistinguishable from regular mobile
handsets: same size, same displays, same software. Most consumers couldn't tell the difference between GPRS models and
ordinary GSM phones. (GSM stands for global systems for mobile communications, a pretty basic standard.)

Only this spring, about 18 months after the notorious Motorola (NYSE:MOT - news) Timeport GPRS model became
commercially available, are the "real" GRPS models arriving to shops. These GPRS phones have entirely new features specifically
designed to use the new data-access technology. Color displays, built-in cameras, new messaging software and Java support will
finally give consumers a reason to think that 2.5G is really a completely separate product category from old second-generation
