hi mrs. peel re, "most singers distort the National Anthem to fit their* vocal range"* i don't know. i think we're witnessing a crop of show offs who think the song is more about them and their style then the other way around... they should be about the song. remember the police officer, or maybe it was a firefighter, who sang the national anthem before the trinidad-hopkins fight at madison square garden, right after the world trade center attack? he was like an opera singer? that man knew what singing the star-spangled banner was all about! he knew it is perfect as written, and will elicit goose bump-type reactions from everyone when performed with respect, dignity, soul and meaning. but the song SHOULD NOT be treated as an opportunity to display one's personal rendition of a classic. work within the confines of the song, and bring pride to our hearts and tears to our eyes.... but DON'T sing it like it's a rhythm and blues tune, or a jazz tune, or rap or hip hop or a cappella. sing it like we know it must be sung. thank you and goodnight :) mark
