Dataplex International to Offer "Peering by PAIX" in Internet Gateway to Eastern Europe; First Commercial Internet Exchange Centre Opens In Hungary
February 04, 2002 11:16:00 AM ET

BUDAPEST, Hungary & PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 2002--Dataplex International Kft. - the co-location leader in the Hungarian market - and PAIX.net, Inc. (PAIX) a leading carrier neutral Internet exchange and subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN, Nasdaq: MFNX), today announced the signing of a license agreement to offer "Peering by PAIX(SM)" services in Dataplex's Budapest facility.

This facility is Hungary's first high-security commercial Internet Exchange. This offering will bring PAIX's proven Layer 2 switch infrastructure and unequaled Internet connectivity and peering capabilities to Europe. The new exchange point provides the first alternative to the Budapest Internet Exchange (BIX), making domestic Internet usage faster and more reliable.

Dataplex International, which announced its incorporation and opening of its initial high security data transmission exchange in Budapest in January, is the first co-location company to offer "Peering by PAIX" in the European market. The goals of this commercial Internet exchange are to establish a higher level of reliability and improve the overall efficiency and speed of domestic and international Internet traffic.

"Peering by PAIX" will give Dataplex International's customers access to a technologically advanced peering and interconnection point. Internet service providers and transit providers can utilize this switch to conduct multiple public and private peering sessions, as well as buy and sell bandwidth and transit. Customers will have a choice of multiple Ethernet port speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second.

Today, the majority of Hungary's domestic ISPs are connected at the BIX, which operates as a non-profit peering point. Dataplex International's commercial grade facility, with "Peering by PAIX"'s reliable peering infrastructure, will provide both domestic and international Internet companies a greater range of services, reliable service levels, and guarantees of continuous operation. Dataplex International's Exchange Center will also improve the efficiency of domestic IP traffic by keeping it within the country, virtually doing away with the need to utilize congested international peering points such as those in Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Customers exchanging traffic in this commercial Internet exchange should see an acceleration of domestic Internet traffic, making access to domestic content more efficient. There should also be an overall improvement of international traffic flow by reducing the burden of local web traffic currently traveling through ISP's international connections.

The PAIX peering infrastructure is established as an industry leader throughout the United States. PAIX was the original carrier-neutral Internet exchange point to deliver comprehensive peering solutions. PAIX currently operates six Class A, neutral Internet exchanges throughout the United States, and manages several other "Peering by PAIX" operations. When combined with Dataplex International's robust standard services, such as round-the-clock operator support, guaranteed uninterrupted power source, and highly sophisticated environmental controls, Dataplex Internet exchange service meets the highest technical standards available today.

"We are introducing a new service that will serve the local Internet community's interests, and is unique in Hungary," said Imre Racz, Dataplex's Director for Technology. "We have found a collaborator in PAIX that is among the best in the world, from both the service provisioning, and standard of equipment aspects, and to whom we can match our own very high standard of data center technology, as well as services."

"By licensing 'Peering by PAIX` through an Industry leader like Dataplex International, we will extend PAIX's connectivity and peering services to customers across the globe in the highest quality, most secure, carrier neutral data centers available today," said Sheldon A. Fishman, PAIX Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "Kicking off our European expansion in Budapest will, undoubtedly, establish PAIX and Dataplex International as major contributors in the growth of the Internet in central Europe."

PAIX serves as a primary Internet peering hub and enables the exponential growth of the Internet through its strategically placed Internet Exchange facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area, Atlanta, Dallas, New York City, Seattle and Vienna, VA. National service providers depend on PAIX to provide regional and national carrier-independent data switching, promoting faster network performance.
