Ted,
For 15 years, I have listened to NRA rhetoric while another 1/2 million people are dead.
Suppose you could un-invent the gun. Do you think all of those people would be alive? I doubt it.
BTW, how do you uninvent a gun? I a a complete opposite of a handy person, but if I was facing a challenge, and I was really motivated, I can see myself going to Home Depot or Sears, buying the necessary tools to build a gun. When did they invent firearms? It must have been at least 400 years ago. The plans of how to make a gun at home would be all over Internet, which is unstoppable.
This country is raising a generations of barbarians, so we end up with barbarian acts. I think the gun is actually shielding us from realizing what kind of degenerates some of the citizens of this country are. A murder with a gun has certain sterility, or even civility to it. You pull the trigger, and if you are far enough, you don't even get bloody.
Imagine a hypothetical scenario of no guns - and undoubtadly fewer gun deaths and total murders (at least in the short run) but some of the murderers who are more highly motivated would keep going. We would have to read stories of how the murder sliced the veins of the victim, how there was a struggle, how he kept stabbing the victim, until the victim was loosing her blood, her strength, and finally stopped fighting back... Stories like this would decimate the membership of ACLU at the least, but undermine the society probably a lot more than the gun debts. The fact that this country is a full of degenerates, and the country itself is degenerating further could not be hidden as easily. At least we now have our false sense that things are ok.
Of course an absence of guns would remove the function of the gun being an equalizer. A week female can stop the attacker with a shot, or a thread of a shot. There would be nothing to protect any female from a stronger male attacker. An absence of the threat of a gun would be a complete assurance to the attacker that the victim is helpless, thereby inviting more attacks.
