Why does gasoline cost so much?
Gasoline may seem expensive, but compared with most other processed liquids, this versatile fuel remains a bargain. For example, bottled spring water sells for the equivalent of about $4 a gallon, coffee $10 a gallon and mouthwash nearly $18 a gallon. True, the price of gasoline in 1950 was 27 cents a gallon, but in today’s dollars that equates to about $1.85 a gallon. Stated another way, the “real” cost of gasoline (the price adjusted for inflation) today is still below what it was 50 years ago.
