Supercar goes on the server

AN IT project worth Pounds 6.25 million is creating a collaborative environment
for Jaguar's 1,000 design engineers in the Midlands.

The luxury car manufacturer has added 50 Silicon Graphics workstations and 13
new desktop servers to its network. There are now more than 150 Silicon
Graphics seats at the company's engineering centre, which will give its
employees all the computing tools they need to do their job interactively.

Roger Staines, Jaguar technical services manager, says: "We are heading
towards a position where we can exploit collaborative engineering to work
together with colleagues and suppliers around the globe."

The latest acquisition will vastly reduce the amount of machine- sharing time
and generate a massive leap in data-sharing. Howard Rippiner, Silicon
Graphics marketing manager says: "Visualisation is a key technology that can
create significant competitive advantage. SiliconWorks solutions provide the
tools for analysing products as 3- D models. These models can be rotated, taken
apart, the colours changed and so on. Teleconferencing facilities now mean
engineers can discuss them without having to be together."

The systems allow the rapid sharing of design information, which means fewer
physical prototypes have to be made and better products come to market faster
and for less money.

The technology also enhances effective design, Rippiner says. "Airbags can be
designed to be safer. Also you can minimise a car's weight for a given strength
through this technology. Metal can be taken out without reducing a car's
strength, and if the weight is reduced fuel consumption is more economical."

Can anyone guess what this contract is worth?
Thanks
