Infospace is the barometer for wireless data usage in the U.S. because of its 80% market share as a wireless services ASP to carrier clients, including AWE, Cingular, Verizon, and just about everyone else except Sprint. As such, it is noteworthy that Infospace recently reported that the aggregate number of active wireless data users among its carrier client base (as opposed to those who have wireless data ability but don't use it regularly) reached 2.5 million by quarter's end, up from either 1.5 or 1.75 million at the end of 3Q. (This number currently represents essentially WAP usage.) Since growth in the number of wireless data users is key to the wireless industry's future growth, I will attempt to remember to report this number regularly as it is revised in future. The media writes endlessly about the number of wireless subscribers, yet no attention is being given to the number of active wireless data subscribers, which I think is even more important. I encourage everyone to start discussing this cardinal statistic.
