Puck,

re: "wireless data"

<< The media writes endlessly about the number of wireless subscribers, yet no attention is being given to the number of active wireless data subscribers, which I think is even more important. I encourage everyone to start discussing this cardinal statistic. >>

Some comments on this ...

I've been attempting to use "wireless data" for some time (but for all practical purposes discontinued doing so some time ago).

For a short period of time I used WAP (which made me a "wireless data" user) but discontinued doing so after about 3 months.

I used both a Qualcomm QCP860 and an Audiovox CDM9000 as a wireless modem for a Palm Vx with a 3rd party microbrowser and proxy server. I was not considered a "wireless data" user when I did that.

Qualcomm had a neat organizer and short data cable for the QCP860. I had to kludge together a 3 piece data cable with null modem connector after Audiovox finally released a data cable for the CDM9000 3 months after the phone was released with no Palm connector.

When I replaced the CDM9000 (and the Palm Vx) with a KYO6035 (no WAP) I again used a 3rd party browser and proxy server. I had a portable keyboard for the Palm Vx but none is yet available for the KYO6035.

I attempted to use the KYO6035 as a modem for laptop but Verizon's Mobile Office software (which has a data compression utility) was incompatible with my Dell Latitude laptop.

I've moved to desktops to XP and the Desktop manager for the KYO6035 is incompatible so I no longer synchronize my database or download AvantGo content. I haven't yet taken the time to see if I can get the units working with the new (XP compatible) Palm OS (4.x rather than 3.5) and Kyocera has not issued an update.

I can now send SMS on my KYO6035 on Verizon, but of course I can only send it to other Verizon users.

Practical use of wireless data is a tad elusive, particularly in the US.

"always on" WAP 2.0 with color support and cascading style sheets will add some utility for the average user provided some useable content is available.

New devices and better connectivity software will help as will higher data rates (at least in the dial-up range).
