The state supreme court interprets state law, and the deadline, being arbitrary and allowed by the state supreme court, was allowed to let the count proceed. The only thing that stopped the count was the Supreme Court. And they had to do it fast, before something terrible happened ... The proof of their knowledge of their own malfeasance is in the tortured language they used: "this shall not be a precedent". This means, one time only, just for our benefactor, George Bush's son, so we can retire in comfort knowing our kids are in comfortable jobs.
