i agree. the whole world is in competitive devaluation fever, which is protectionism in its modern form. O'Neill apparently thinks though the hollowed out US manufacturing base isn't worth protecting anyway...that would be fine, if it truly reflected a free market stance. but since there is an official 'strong dollar policy', and it is well known by now that the US financial system is harboring great risks that would be magnified by a dollar decline, everything he says has to be questioned. it's not what he purports it to be. note btw. that the weakening of the Yen has only served to postpone shakeout/reform in Japan once again. so what we're witnessing is international co-ordination of muddle-through policies.
