Ken, Operating earnings are the most important tool when evaluating the value of a company. They are helping the investor by pointing out that operating earnings are stronger than the net income numbers would lead you to believe.

MSFT for example has increased its operating earnings yet their net income is down due to investment losses. Sure, the bears will say that investment losses are possible in the future, but if you really want to know what MSFT is worth, you need to look at operating earnings and NOT the investment losses. It makes a big difference in the PE ratio.
