HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Silicon foundry supplier United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) here today reported a 16.6% sequential increase in net sales to NT$13.94 billion ($398 million) in the fourth quarter of 2001 compared to NT$11.96 billion in the third quarter, but revenues were down 56.2% from NT$31.85 billion ($918 million) in Q4 of 2000.

The world's second largest silicon foundry cut its net loss to NT$3.75 billion ($107 million) in the fourth quarter compared to a loss of NT$4.02 billion ($115 million) in Q3. A year ago, UMC posted a net income of NT$16.75 billion (477 million) in Q4 of 2000.

The company's total fab-utilization rate improved from 36% in the third quarter to 48% in the fourth period. However, UMC also said it now plans to cut its total capital spending in 2002 by 27.3%, from $1.1 billion in 2001 to around $800 million this year as it attempts to drive up its capacity utilization rates. UMC said the majority of its 2002 investments are earmarked for 300-mm wafer production lines and advanced process modules with copper interconnects.
