SAN DIEGO -- Excimer light source supplier Cymer Inc. today reported a 3% sequential increase in revenues to $54.8 million in the fourth quarter compared to $53.0 million in Q3 of 2001. Cymer's revenues were 46.4% lower than $102.2 million in Q4 of 2000.

The lithography light source supplier posted a net loss of $1.9 million in the fourth quarter compared to a net income of $20.2 million in the same period last year. The company narrowed its loss from $2.8 million in Q3 of 2001.

"Revenue for the quarter came in higher than we had originally anticipated, primarily because the mix of products shifted strongly to our advanced argon fluoride (ArF) products," said Bob Akins, chairman and CEO of the San Diego company. He said Cymer recognized revenue on 55 light sources in Q4 compared to 62 in Q3. ArF light sources, for 193-nm lithography tools, accounted for 45% of the units shipped.
