But it's a rare war among developed nations these days that ends by attrition.

It's rare that developed nations fight any kind of war, let alone one of attrition. Hasn't really happened since WWII (unless you count the Falklands)..

But I will suggest that Israel fought a terrible war of attrition in 1982 after their invasion of Lebanon to rout the PLO.

And as Nadine has pointed out, any war for Israel that lasts more than a couple of weeks, amounts to economic disaster...

That's the achilles heel of Israel... staying power.
