re: WCDMA for KT ICOM in Korea
>> LG To Supply Equipment To KT ICOM
By Kim Deok-hyun Korea Times
KT ICOM, a third-generation (3G) business arm of KT Corp., announced yesterday it has selected LG Electronics as its equipment supplier for the next-generation mobile telephony, which is based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology.
LG was picked among the four bidders _ Samsung Electronics, a consortium between Nortel Networks and Mercury, LG Electronics and Ericsson.
Early last month, the Nortel-Mercury consortium and Ericsson withdrew their bids, KT ICOM spokesman Cho Ji-hoon said.
LG Electronics will supply mobile handsets and network equipment for the 3G service, and KT ICOM said it will launch a trial operation before the World Cup finals, despite skepticism over the timing of the launch.
KT ICOM, which won one of the three 3G licenses in Dec. 2000, plans to begin the 3G phone service in the country's 10 cities that host the World Cup finals. Cho said financial terms for the deal will be made public at the end of this month.
Third-generation mobile phone services allow for the rapid transmission of video and data to mobile phones. <<
