It is not as if he has been without detractors. The problem is that as long as he has a constituency in the black community, he has standing as a leader, like Sharpton or Marion Barry, and the media is composed of people who, first, are afraid of appearing racist, and second, agree with Jackson that federal programs are the way to help African- Americans.
