Scientists focus on the tobacco plant as possible cancer-fighter - Boston Globe
Notes the irony of tobacco being a plant that could be used to save not kill people before jumping into a discussion of how the plant's being genetically engineered by scientists to produce compounds that fight an array of diseases including cancer. Practitioners of ''biopharming'' note it's a far safer way to produce drugs because it reduces the risk of viruses from animals making their way into people. The most clinically advanced such treatment: CaroRX, an antibody that helps combat tooth decay - it's in Phase II trials now. Tobacco's potential in this arena hasn't been lost on tobacco farmers - in 1999 the Virginia Farm Bureau set up its own biotech to work with farmers and scientists. Says the CEO of the company: ''We really like the idea of using tobacco for medicinal purposes. ... It certainly wouldn't hurt [tobacco's] image.''
