I think that Israel's existence was, and is, the central issue -- I also feel quite certain that such an offer will never be forthcoming.

Oh, I don't disagree with you there. I'm sure that for many Arabs (perhaps the majority) that's the true intent behind this support for the Palestinians. But smoking out their true intent would be the basis behind making Friedman's scenario the ultimate goal.

At least all sides would know where they stand, and how far they are willing to go.

If there's any role the US can play in the Mid-East peace process, it's pinning down the parties to agreements that are enforceable and permanent. Failing that, then exposing uncooperative governments for what they are, and cutting them off economically and politically.

A bit of arm-twisting can go a long way... If you know what arms to twist, and how much pressue to exert.
