(15:30) Police capture suicide bomber outside Jerusalem
By The Jerusalem Post Internet Staff

Border Police officers captured a Palestinian terrorist wearing an explosive vest on the outskirts of Jerusalem around 3 p.m. today.

The terrorist - wearing an explosive vest - got on Egged bus No. 176 traveling between Ma'aleh Adumim and Jerusalem and was caught by security forces at the a-Zaim roadblock just east of the capital city.

The bus driver noticed the suspicious individual en route and stopped at the a-Zaim roadblock, Israel Radio reported.

The terrorist attacked border policemen stationed at the roadblock who got on the bus to investigate. They managed to take control of and handcuff the terrorist without setting off the bomb.

The entire area was closed to vehicular traffic while police sappers search for additional bombs and troops scoured the bus and surrounding area for possible accomplices.

Sappers took nearly two hours to defuse the explosive vest the terrorist had hidden beneath his clothes.

One Border Police squad commander was lightly wounded in the struggle with the terrorist.

The government commended the bus driver for his alertness.

"The fact that carnage was avoided does not mean that we do not view the event with the utmost gravity," said Emmanuel Nahshon, a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Israel Police spokesman Gil Kleiman said the bomber was a Palestinian and was being interrogated. He gave no further
details.

Channel Two reported the man was a Hamas activist.

Israel Harush, who lives in Ma'aleh Adumim, told Israel Radio he was in a car near the roadblock when he saw Border Police officer struggling with a man on the bus, and he ran to help.

"I grabbed his arm and said, 'give me the handcuffs,' and slapped the first one on his wrist," he said.

Speaking from the roadblock, he said he was still overwhelmed by the scope of the incident. "Now I see that I helped save a whole bus, and I can say I did something with my life," he said.

Deputy Jerusalem police commander Ilan Franco said the bus was full.
